Olympiacos Players Face Failure Fines

first_imgATHENS – Olympiacos President Evangelos Marinakis, has fined the team 500,000 euros for lackluster performances and said they either have to win the Greek championshipand make a “sacrifice” or face the consequences.Marinakis has been caught up in scandals in the Greek soccer league, which was recently suspended for a week because of relentless violence, including battles between team Presidens and officials.Olympiacos, a power in Greece but a flop in European play for decades, lost 2-0 to lowly-regarded Dnipro of Ukraine and then struggled to a 1-1 tie in the Greek league with the second-division team AEK, infuriating him.“Olympiacos is the largest Greek club and for each of you it is an honor to play for this team. You will have to respect and honor Olympiacos,” Marinakis told the players, Agence France Presse said.“Anyone who has a problem or does not like it here, must have the guts to get up and leave, and that applies to everyone,” he added. He didn’t say how the fines would be portioned out.He added: “As long as you are playing for Olympiacos, you will give everything and sacrifice for this jersey. You will win the league championship and the Greek Cup. Nothing else goes through my mind. Put it well in your minds and do it accordingly.”Olympiacos has been eliminated from the Champions League and Europa League. But it is six points ahead in the domestic Super League with nine matches remaining.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img
